Think you're better than me?

I have been avoiding this topic for a long time now. I cannot mention how many times people are addressed as and judged upon their last names and castes. We are all brown people. Does it matter who is a freaking Khatri, Baniya, Jatt, Rajput, Brahmin etc.? Yeah, to some empty-headed, uncultured dimwits, it does. But here.. living in a North American society? Really?

Throughout high school, guys used to call me "Khanna" or "Khatri." Why is my caste being associated with anything that you have to do with me? I come from two religious backgrounds, Sikhism and Hinduism. My dad is a Kshatriya and mom is a Jatti. And I don't give two shits about what people think of that. I respect my religion a lot. For me, my religion is a combination of both because I am accustomed to pray in both a Mandir and a Gurudwara. I went to a Christian school for eight years, and I am used to praying in a Church as well. What's your point? Why is the whole 'Jattism' deal blown out of proportion?

First of all, this is not India. Second of all, you are not living in a colonial era. There are no peasants and lords. Living in Canada, it doesn't matter if you are a freaking Shudra or a Brahmin, you can have the same job, the same house, the same car and the same income. Your caste is notably irrelevant. SOME people (fucking idiots who think being a higher caste either gives you a set of three testicles or some undefined superpowers, precisely in their own heads) think they are superior than others and look down upon other castes.

I don't want a racial forum on here where all of you come attacking me. I am not saying anything about anybody's race, caste or creed. I am saying ONE thing here. LOOK AT OTHERS EQUALLY! Learn to be inclusive of all races. Yes, I don't agree with the Hindu caste system as well; it is unfair. But Guru Nanak Dev Ji started Sikhism INSPIRED to eradicate that castism, not to increase it. The whole point of creating Sikhism was to get rid of the Hindu Caste system to design a religion that is inclusive of everybody. Ever wonder why Langar is open to EVERYONE? This is so common sense. Please educate yourselves. If you don't know anything about your own religion, do not open your mouth to downgrade other people and their beliefs. I know how to read the Hanuman Chalisa, and I have taken an equal amount of interest to learn the 'Pehli Paudi' for 'Japji Sahib.' My parents have been the most amazing educators to me and my brother for both religions.

I am talking about people who get Khanda tattooed over their body, hanging in their cars, claim to be superior (otherwise known as 'fukre') and in reality, know NOTHING about their religion. Flaunting your religious symbol and your last name, downgrading other castes makes you look even lower. And their drive to PROVE with the most stupendous reasons, that their religion IS above all others. Wow. Where are you people coming from? I am half-Sikh, and I know WAY more than you about YOUR acclaimed religion, in detail. Have you ever even stepped foot in a temple to do some 'seva?' Do you even know about the notion of seva? How it started? Which Guru started it? Do you know ANYTHING?

Something that pisses me off the most.. GENERALIZATION. All these weird ass fobs in my class at Humber - if you are a Hindu (i.e. my last name makes it obvious) they will start calling you 'Brahman' or in their pendu accent, 'Bahmani.' All Hindus are not Brahmins. Like PLEASE educate yourselves. I can checkout multiple books for you from the library, and you should renew them a good three-four times to your satisfaction, till you actually FIGURE something out.

This post is dedicated to the biggest fob I have ever met in my life, with the pendu-est thinking possible, the one who thinks being Jatt grants you all the luxuries and superiorities of life. Man, you need some SERIOUS growing up! To the guy, who looks at life through a straw. Not even a regular straw, the teeny-tiny straw that used to come with Frooti in your country. Yeah, that fucking narrow.

P.S. This isn't 1947. It is 2012. Let history be history. Create something better TODAY to let the blood-shed just be a bad memory. Don't reinforce those notions to create hatred while LIVING in North American communities. If you wanna play this dirty game, go back to your country.

Note: This is not written to offend anybody. It is solely addressed to the idiot that I came across.

  1. well written blog.
people don't normally raise their voice regarding touchy subjects like these, mainly for getting in trouble or being accused for racial comments.

Being a hindu punjabi, i can say i have heard some pretty stupid things about my religion as well, normally coming from uneducated people in high school. i was addressed as the "brahmini" as well i didn't see why it was even being brought up.

I didn't even know about the castes/religion details until i took some course at university that addressed each of the categories and how they were formed. But yea, youre right about the jattism deal. Jatts in hinduism or sikhism and from pakistani cultures claim to be better and superior and still think they have rights to our land, property and labor like they did years ago, shameful.

Sadly, this too is a vicious cycle that we are caught up in, being in 1947 or 2012 is of no difference to certain people. I hope we get rid of this someday.

  3. Oh this is NICE.. I said things that I probably shouldn't have.. and the shameless didn't even hang up on me so I kept going..

I also forwarded his messages to a few of my friends who go to Humber to humiliate him when they see him around!

  5. I totally agree! But, honestly I dont understand why sikh people have this view! I have to say about 90% of "Jatts" think they are better than me because they are so-called jatts. I mean do people forget the fact that the whole sikh religon came out of hinduism, & no i do not mean to say that in a offensive way. One of my closest friends is half sikh/hindu, yet she finds it insulting if i even mention she;s half hindu. The ignorance of people will always prevail over logic. And no I do not agree with the caste system in Hinduism as well, but honestly that was a LONG time ago, it still exists but people are now growing up! Frankly, I think the relations between the two religons were fine until 1984, now the first thing that I hear about if a topic comes up on religon is that "your people killed our people in delhi masscare" but what about the innocents lost in punjab? People just seriously need to grow up and get over it. Live life with love not hate. <3

  7. sorry. im not sikh, so dont be offended when i ask this, but itd be great if you could go into more detail about the jatt issue? (more basic details, since im not sikh, so i wouldnt know. excuse my ignorance, i just want to learn, so im asking)

i grew up in a relatively free environment (wasnt strictly religious or anything)
ive seen the caste system take its toll on the thinking of my relatives and such.
    its quite shitty actually.
my family and extended family etc, are all from the mumbai pune area. they have a strange sense of entitlement simply because they speak marathi, and are maratha.
im yet to understand what the craze is.
what determines if youre worth more than another person simply because of your last name?

  8. I am not offended and totally happy to educate you. Basically, you must be aware with the Hindu caste system (four primary castes starting in prestigious order - Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishyas and Shudras. The last caste was the 'untouchables'). These are categorized according to the occupations back in the day. Example, all teachers or priests or educators had to be Brahmans, and warriors and legal attorneys would be Kshatriyas etc.

Relating it to Sikhism, the first guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Hindu himself. And in his early childhood years, he began to realize that he does not agree with the whole muslim vs. hindu deal.. therefore, he wanted to create a religion that was free of all gender discrimination. That was the birth of Sikhism. The philosophy of the religion is completely different than what it is made out to be today. Google the name of the guru for more information regarding what he wanted this new religion to be..

Well, sikhism also developed some caste systems in their religion over time.. which werent so prevalent back then..
Just how BRAHMANS are considered the TOP caste out of the hierarchy of the hindu caste system.. likewise JATTS are considered the TOP caste from the hierarchy of sikh caste system.

For obvious reasons, they collide. You'll hear jatt singers sing songs about or talk about brahmans in a derogatory way. Hence, the ignorance of calling all hindus BRAHMANS when clearly there are other castes.

For the sikh caste system there are other castes than jatts, i.e. ramgharia and chamaar (being the lowest). So for example, it's all colonial based - ramgharians work for jatts because they were a minority when jatts took up the positions of landlords back then.

So in essence, both religions DO have class based racism which is even more prominent with their castes and their surnames are used a sign to reinforce that inequality.

There are other castes as well based on occupations in the past in sikhism and hinduism.. i.e. halvaayi (pretty much a baker), or suniyaar (jewellers), and lohaars.

    Hope that provided some insight..
