Most of my friends tease me about my low-immune and the ability to get sick at the drop of a hat. Every changing season, my mother always tells me "Put more clothes on! Don't eat ice cream." And the list goes on.
Everyone gets sick at some point in the year. But let me dramatically tell you, that it feels like death to me. I am unable to carry out daily functions. I don't cook. I want to be babied. I want to be fed and taken care of. I think that also comes from being so babied at home before my wedding. Every time I get sick, it's habitual for me to ask MOM to treat me like a toddler again and make me her special "here-you-go-baby wali Khichri." :D
All they tell you is to drink liquids, take Advil and rest. I am not waiting in line to hear stuff I already know. If I suspect that I have something unusual than a common cold, then I would usually consult with the doctor.
My birthday was a blur because I fell sick right the next day. It's also safe to say I went overboard with drinking when I thought about how close I am to 30. That is depressing. I have decided that I am going to be 27 for another year. And I expect my friends to play along with that.
I spent the entire week coughing mucous, using every tissue box in the house, Vicks-ing every night and being drugged on Paracetamols and Cetrazines. It's not pretty. Here are a few new things I tried that helped me:
- Slept with my humidifier next to me (I put eucalyptus essential oil for better breathing)
- Used Vicks Vapour Rub every night
- Took night showers to help me sleep better (steam bath)
- Drank lots and lots of real HONEY mixed with ginger juice instead of tea bags
- Drank desi chai with a plethora of ingredients- saunf, tulsi, ginger, elaichi, laung etc.
- Rested my voice instead of trying to talk
- Stayed away from my phone / other gadgets to truly get rest
- Gargled with salt water
- Steam sessions every night with Vicks Steamer
- Married someone who would sympathize with me when I act like I'm dying with a flu (LOL)
- Last, but not the least - disinfected my house and changed my sheets in the middle of being sick as opposed to waiting for recovery (I usually wait until after, but this time I thought - I need to somehow stop the germs from making their way back to me or spreading to hubs).
I just thought it would be nice to share some of these things because we all know that we get sick at any time with our wonderful bipolar Canadian weather. What do you guys do when you're sick? Any fluid concoctions I am not aware of?
Goodnight everyone. Stay warm. Stay healthy.
