2018: Post #1

HI all!

First post of this year... I was hoping to write sooner than this. But now that we're here. Let's talk!

How have you guys been? I hope 2017 was fantastic for everyone. It was great for me - better than 2016 anyway. What am I up to this year? Lots of things!

1. We are all on a journey of continuous self-improvement. Naturally, I have set goals to better myself for the new year. I haven't necessarily taken actions to achieve all but I got started on some. Any little progress IS progress! :) My goal this year is to create a vision board. I didn't believe in it until I saw it going around a lot. It inspired me! Now, I am motivated to create one for myself.

2. Career Advancement - I love my job. I love HR! This is my calling. I know it took me a long time to get here but at least I am not retiring :)
Your path does not have to be the same as your colleagues. Everyone has their own life map and it is not important to abide by societal norms. It is absolutely not necessary for us brown people to listen to our relatives and friends about how well their kids are doing in comparison. If I've learned anything about having a career - it is this: Dreams have no limit. No age limit. No time limit. DO what makes you happy. Pursue your dreams.

There are many famous people who were stuck in mundane jobs before they realized their calling. Consider yourself on a learning journey. I used to say "I wasted my time in the legal field." Little did I know, that was not time wasted. Anything you learn anywhere can be used at some point in your life. No knowledge is useless. It's true that I could have been in a mid-senior or management role by now if I chose HR right after grade 12. But with all the detours that I took - it made me the person I am today. And that's not something I regret at all. Same goes for all of you out there who have not had it right the first time. Go after what you see yourself doing for the rest of your life!

3. Fun & Travel - We grind on the daily. I see my hubby for may be an hour on weeknights and then on weekends. We need to factor in some fun. Being a workaholic is great but you have to make time to party. Travelling is blissful. We made a pact a couple years ago that we will vacation at least once a year. And we have been going strong with that pact. I visited a new City/Country every year since I got married. I've been to Mexico twice, Las Vegas, Florida, India (twice), Cuba & now Punta Cana - all within the last 3 years. I've been fortunate enough to have travel plans and I am very grateful for that. I hope we can make time even for little getaways even if we can't travel to other countries.

4. Health
I will discuss this in a later post but I have been diagnosed with things I didn't know I had. It has come off as a surprise but I am prepared to fight them and reverse my symptoms by taking baby steps. I hope everyone is in good health. Eat well, walk, and take precautions. Never take your health for granted guys!

5. Love more, fight less - this is SO important. Every coming year, I realize how easy it is to pick up fights and how difficult it is to be forgiving and patient. I am choosing the latter. I've become a lot more patient than I used to be. Living with an opposite personality and adjusting to their style of living was always a challenge for me. But as you grow old - love deepens as well as your understanding. We are so much better in resolving issues as compared to the past. I hope to continue this trend and neglect little things that get us riled up for no reason. Just ignore and be positive!
